SUMMARY:Mono Lake/Eastern Sierras Weekend Tour
DESCRIPTION:Thurs.-Sun. July 17-20\, 2014 \nA vast and ancient lake on the eastern slope of Yosemite\, Mono is famous for its unique tufa formations that rise from its shoreline. Snow-capped Sierra peaks\, forests\, high desert country and volcanic geology all combine to give a feeling of a vast wilderness shaped by great natural forces. The lake and Sierra woodlands are a magnet to several hundred bird species\, including phalaropes\, plovers\, grebes\, pelicans\, swifts\, raptors\, ducks and woodpeckers. Local songbirds include warblers\, nuthatches\, thrushes\, kinglets\, corvids\, shrikes and flycatchers. Osprey\, Mt. Bluebird\, Sage Grouse\, Black-billed Magpie\, Clark’s Nutcracker\, Audubon’s warblers\, Red-breasted Sapsucker and Townsend’s Solitaire are among a total of 75-80 species usually observed. Our tour begins at Thurs. afternoon at June Lake\, south of Lee Vining (HQ at Boulder Lodge) and ends Sunday at noon. Over the weekend\, among many locations we will explore are Mono Lake\, the ghost town of Bodie\, Bridgeport Reservoir and Lee Vining Canyon. The marshes recede in all directions for hundreds of yards\, and are surrounded by the beautiful hills of Marin. SUMMARY:Pescadero Village and Coastal Birding
DESCRIPTION:Weds. July 2\, 8am-4pm \nThe rugged San Mateo coastline\, with the Pacific surf crashing on the beaches between the headlands\, is one of the Bay Area’s most beautiful sights. Just south of Half Moon Bay it contains the tiny village of Pescadero\, surrounded by woodlands and hills. In our morning walk along the beach we can observe birds such as Heerman’s and Western gulls\, White-tailed Kites\, harriers\, Red-tails and grebes. Next stop will be the rocky headlands\, with Brown pelicans\, Willets\, turnstones and oystercatchers flying among the rocks. Then we head over to the village for lunch and in the afternoon visit the Harley Goat Farm\, a unique and charming institution made up of several hundred goats and several people. SUMMARY:Elkhorn Slough Estuarine Preserve\, Moss Landing
DESCRIPTION:Sat. June 21\, 2014\, 9am-4pm \nElkhorn Slough\, situated south of Santa Cruz\, has a fabled reputation as one of the greatest concentrations of marine mammals and birdlife found anywhere on the California coast. This estuarine preserve and the surrounding area has a great variety of wetlands\, seacoast\, ponds\, beaches and woodlands\, all of which harbor an enormous gathering of birds and mammals. We can expect to see pelicans\, gulls and terns\, plus numerous kinds of raptors\, cormorants\, grebes\, shorebirds\, songbirds and perhaps owls and loons. Great numbers of birds and sea mammals such as Harbor seals and Sea otters give a continuous rush of excitement to our wildlife observations. DESCRIPTION:Fri.-Sun. June 6-8\, 2014 \nWhen you visit the Sierras you understand why John Muir devoted his life to them: these great forests\, pure rivers\, lakes and soaring peaks are a revelation. Our headquarters for this summer weekend getaway will be the Sierra Valley\, 25 miles north of Lake Tahoe. It is a vast and wild landscape dotted with little villages like Portola\, Blairsden and Sierraville. The valley’s wetlands and forests provide homes to a extraordinary variety of birds\, butterflies\, wildflowers\, trees and mammals. We will visit Lake Davis\, the valley marshes\, the Feather River\, Yuba Pass\, Plumas-Eureka State Park and other locations. Likely birds will include sapsuckers\, warblers\, Yellow-headed Blackbirds\, Bald Eagles\, Osprey\, White Pelicans\, Mt. Bluebirds\, White-faced Ibis\, Sandhill Cranes\, Black–billed Magpies\, Nighthawks\, ducks and hummingbirds. Songbirds include flycatchers\, finches\, swallows\, nuthatches and thrushes. Individual trips are $30.  Use the website or register at the first class. \nThe BBA class is a relaxed introduction to the birds of the Bay Area. It meets for 10 weeks\, with six fieldtrips and four class sessions (class sessions meet at the NBSC). Fieldtrips will explore parks throughout the Bay Area\, such as Bolinas Lagoon\, the Sonoma-Napa Shoreline\, Sunol Regional Park and Rush Creek\, among others. The class discusses binocular use and techniques of identification and observation\, together with standard field-guides. SUMMARY:Cosumnes Preserve\, Galt (north of Lodi)
DESCRIPTION:Located near the Sacramento Delta\, this preserve of woodlands\, marshes and farmland has enormous numbers of waterfowl\, Tundra swans\, raptors (Red-tails\, harriers\, kestrels)\, shorebirds and songbirds. Sandhill Cranes are generally in good numbers this time of year. Walking along the Cosumnes River we can see all manner of songbirds (warblers\, kinglets\, thrushes\, finches\, etc.) flitting through the trees. Scaup\, gadwall\, teal\, Hundreds of Shovelers\, Wigeon and Pintail are placidly moving about in the many wetlands. Occasionally Peregrines\, Great Horned Owls and bitterns can be spotted. In the afternoon we’ll visit Woodbridge Road for more cranes\, waterfowl and raptors. Minimal walking. Bring lunch and drinks.

SUMMARY:Gray Lodge/Sacramento NWR Wildfowl Weekend
DESCRIPTION:Several million ducks and geese migrate through the Sacramento Valley during the fall. More than 300 species of birds and mammals\, both resident and migratory\, use the refuges of the Sacramento Valley\, including almost half of the Pacific flyway’s waterfowl population. This weekend tour of several of the valley’s legendary birding areas should produce great numbers of raptors\, ducks\, geese\, swans\, shorebirds\, waders\, Sandhill cranes and songbirds. The tour will begin at 1pm Friday at the Sacramento NWR\, break for dinner at 5pm\, and continue Sat. morning at Gray Lodge. SUMMARY:Shollenberger Park\, Petaluma
DESCRIPTION:This wetland complex along the Petaluma River is a wonderful setting for viewing a surprising array of birdlife\, almost any season. In the fall and winter it hosts cormorants\, herons\, egrets\, geese and swans\, some raptors\, many species of ducks and shorebirds — not to mention a great variety of songbirds (such as sparrows\, finches\, pipits\, bluebirds). Terrain is flat\, with a short walk of about 1-2 miles.

DESCRIPTION:Sept. 4- Nov. 6 (Weds. 9am-12pm) \nMeets at North Berkeley Senior Center\, 1901 Hearst (at ML King Way)\, Berkeley\nRegistration is $75\, use the website or register at first class. \nThe BBA fall class meets for 10 weeks\, with six fieldtrips and four class sessions. Fieldtrips will explore parks throughout the Bay Area\, such as Coyote Hills and Crab Cove Regional Parks\, Hawk Hill/GGNRA and Las Gallinas Wetlands in Marin. With fall migration in full swing\, the class will again concentrate on raptor and shorebird identification. Total species observed usually top 75\, with many songbirds seen\, including finches\, wrens\, thrushes\, flycatchers\, warblers\, sparrows\, towhees and corvids. Many raptor\, shorebird\, woodpecker and wildfowl species are also among birds frequently observed.

SUMMARY:Monterey Bay Birding Tour
DESCRIPTION:Monterey Bay is one of the most scenic areas of the entire California coastline\, with an extraordinary concentration of wildlife\, including birds\, wintering monarch butterflies\, sea mammals and migrating whales. The area includes Monterey itself\, Elkhorn Slough and Moss Landing\, the Salinas and Carmel River estuaries and Pt. Lobos\, among many. We can expect to see Sea otters and seals paddling in the surf\, as well as pelicans\, terns\, herons and egrets\, raptors\, many kinds of shorebirds\, woodpeckers and songbirds—our species total should top 80. The weekend begins at noon Friday at Elkhorn Slough (near Moss Landing on Hwy 1) and ends at 1pm Sunday in Monterey. Lodging options will be sent at registration.

SUMMARY:Pescadero Marsh/San Mateo Coast
DESCRIPTION:The magnificent San Mateo coastline harbors many inlets\, beaches\, rocky headlands and marshes. Perhaps the finest combination is around Pescadero\, a quaint village about 15 miles south of Half Moon Bay that “time forgot and the ages cannot improve.” Birds are extremely diverse\, from raptors such as Great Horned Owls\, White-tailed Kites and harriers to many kinds of wildfowl\, shorebirds and songbirds. Waterbirds usually include turnstones\, heron and egrets\, oystercatchers and terns. Lunch is in picturesque Pescadero. 9am – 4pm.

SUMMARY:Mono Lake/Eastern Sierra Tour
DESCRIPTION:Mono Lake\, the jewel of the Eastern Sierras\, is alive and well\, and home to hundreds of bird species! The great lake\, known for its unique tufa formations\, is at the eastern edge of the Sierras and surrounded by the rolling sagebrush country of the high plains. This Ice Age lake is almost a million years old and still forming under volcanic action\, with lava domes\, hot springs and volcanic craters nearby. Snow-capped peaks line the horizon. Birds such as Sage grouse\, Clark’s nutcracker\, Black-billed Magpies\, Brewer’s sparrow\, Yellow-headed Blackbirds\, Mt. Bluebird\, Mt. Chickadee and White-headed woodpeckers are among the many found in the surrounding area. Also included among the 70-80 species we expect to see are many warbler\, woodpecker\, raptor\, shorebird and wildfowl species. We will stay at Boulder Lodge in the village of June Lake\, and visit sites such as Bridgeport Reservoir\, the ghost-town of Bodie\, Mammoth Lakes\, Lee Vining and Mono Lake itself. This combination of birdlife and mountain scenery is unique in California.

Songbirds such as Orioles\, Marsh Wrens\, Western Bluebirds and Red-wing Blackbirds are among the many songbirds seen in the summer. Great Horned Owls are resident.

The preserve and the surrounding area has a great variety of wetlands\, seacoast\, ponds\, beautiful beaches and woodlands. We can expect to see pelicans\, ducks\, shorebirds and terns\, plus raptors\, cormorants\, grebes\, songbirds and perhaps owls\, as well as Sea Otters and seals. Bring or buy lunch at Moss Landing. Walking is at a casual pace\, about two miles.
