DESCRIPTION:Sept. 4- Nov. 6 (Weds. 9am-12pm) \nMeets at North Berkeley Senior Center\, 1901 Hearst (at ML King Way)\, Berkeley\nRegistration is $75\, use the website or register at first class. \nThe BBA fall class meets for 10 weeks\, with six fieldtrips and four class sessions. Fieldtrips will explore parks throughout the Bay Area\, such as Coyote Hills and Crab Cove Regional Parks\, Hawk Hill/GGNRA and Las Gallinas Wetlands in Marin. With fall migration in full swing\, the class will again concentrate on raptor and shorebird identification. Total species observed usually top 75\, with many songbirds seen\, including finches\, wrens\, thrushes\, flycatchers\, warblers\, sparrows\, towhees and corvids. Many raptor\, shorebird\, woodpecker and wildfowl species are also among birds frequently observed.

SUMMARY:Monterey Bay Birding Tour
DESCRIPTION:Monterey Bay is one of the most scenic areas of the entire California coastline\, with an extraordinary concentration of wildlife\, including birds\, wintering monarch butterflies\, sea mammals and migrating whales. The area includes Monterey itself\, Elkhorn Slough and Moss Landing\, the Salinas and Carmel River estuaries and Pt. Lobos\, among many. We can expect to see Sea otters and seals paddling in the surf\, as well as pelicans\, terns\, herons and egrets\, raptors\, many kinds of shorebirds\, woodpeckers and songbirds—our species total should top 80. The weekend begins at noon Friday at Elkhorn Slough (near Moss Landing on Hwy 1) and ends at 1pm Sunday in Monterey. Lodging options will be sent at registration.

SUMMARY:Pescadero Marsh/San Mateo Coast
DESCRIPTION:The magnificent San Mateo coastline harbors many inlets\, beaches\, rocky headlands and marshes. Perhaps the finest combination is around Pescadero\, a quaint village about 15 miles south of Half Moon Bay that “time forgot and the ages cannot improve.” Birds are extremely diverse\, from raptors such as Great Horned Owls\, White-tailed Kites and harriers to many kinds of wildfowl\, shorebirds and songbirds. Waterbirds usually include turnstones\, heron and egrets\, oystercatchers and terns. Lunch is in picturesque Pescadero. 9am – 4pm.

SUMMARY:Mono Lake/Eastern Sierra Tour
DESCRIPTION:Mono Lake\, the jewel of the Eastern Sierras\, is alive and well\, and home to hundreds of bird species! The great lake\, known for its unique tufa formations\, is at the eastern edge of the Sierras and surrounded by the rolling sagebrush country of the high plains. This Ice Age lake is almost a million years old and still forming under volcanic action\, with lava domes\, hot springs and volcanic craters nearby. Snow-capped peaks line the horizon. Birds such as Sage grouse\, Clark’s nutcracker\, Black-billed Magpies\, Brewer’s sparrow\, Yellow-headed Blackbirds\, Mt. Bluebird\, Mt. Chickadee and White-headed woodpeckers are among the many found in the surrounding area. Also included among the 70-80 species we expect to see are many warbler\, woodpecker\, raptor\, shorebird and wildfowl species. We will stay at Boulder Lodge in the village of June Lake\, and visit sites such as Bridgeport Reservoir\, the ghost-town of Bodie\, Mammoth Lakes\, Lee Vining and Mono Lake itself. This combination of birdlife and mountain scenery is unique in California.

DESCRIPTION:For its size\, this small regional park has a great diversity of habitat\, including extensive marshes\, grasslands\, hills and scattered open woodlands. Consequently it has a great diversity of birds such as raptors\, woodpeckers\, shorebirds\, wildfowl\, owls and songbirds. Included are Green-wing and Cinnamon Teal\, White Pelicans\, Harriers\, White-Tail Kites and Forster’s Terns. Songbirds such as Orioles\, Marsh Wrens\, Western Bluebirds and Red-wing Blackbirds are among the many songbirds seen in the summer. Great Horned Owls are resident.

SUMMARY:Elkhorn Slough Estuarine Preserve\, Moss Landing
DESCRIPTION:Elkhorn Slough\, situated in the middle of Monterey Bay\, has a fabled reputation as one of the greatest concentrations of marine mammals (sea otters and seals) and birdlife found anywhere on the California coast. The preserve and the surrounding area has a great variety of wetlands\, seacoast\, ponds\, beautiful beaches and woodlands. We can expect to see pelicans\, ducks\, shorebirds and terns\, plus raptors\, cormorants\, grebes\, songbirds and perhaps owls\, as well as Sea Otters and seals. Bring or buy lunch at Moss Landing. Walking is at a casual pace\, about two miles.

SUMMARY:Sierra Valley Birding Tour
DESCRIPTION:Our headquarters for this summer weekend will be the Sierra Valley\, an area about 25 miles north of Lake Tahoe\, bounded by little towns like Blairsden\, Portola and Loyalton. The area’s wild rivers\, grasslands\, lakes and forests provide homes to a extraordinary variety of birds. We will visit Lake Davis\, the Sierra Valley marshes\, the Feather River\, Yuba Pass\, Plumas-Eureka State Park and other locations. We expect to see Sapsuckers and other woodpeckers\, numerous warblers\, Yellow-headed Blackbirds\, Osprey\, White Pelicans\, Mt. Bluebirds\, White-faced Ibis\, Sandhill Cranes\, Black–billed Magpies\, Nighthawks\, Clark’s Nutcrackers\, ducks\, hummingbirds and many songbirds. The weekend trip begins at noon Friday in Sierraville and ends Sunday at noon. I will provide a list of local accommodations for your stay.

DESCRIPTION:This very scenic EBMUD land in the East Bay hills is a mix of forest\, grasslands and wetlands. Surrounded by wooded hills on all sides\, it is very beautiful country. We commonly see raptors\, herons\, woodpeckers\, ducks\, egrets\, finches\, jays\, thrushes\, warblers and nuthatches. The walk is about two miles on level terrain.

SUMMARY:Klamath Nat. Wildlife Refuge Tour\, CA/OR
DESCRIPTION:In the spring of each year\, many thousands of wildfowl\, shorebirds and raptors pass through or breed in the complex of wildlife refuges known as the Klamath Basin\, located on the California-Oregon border. This wild\, open and scenic country contains thousands of acres of marshes\, forests and lakes that host one of the great spectacles of birdlife on the West Coast. Birds found here include Sandhill cranes\, Snow and White-fronted geese\, shorebirds\, Tundra swans\, ducks of all descriptions\, Bald Eagles\, Red-tails and Harriers\, owls and many kinds of songbirds. We will head out each day to view wildlife at several refuges\, lakes or marshes. We expect to see 70-80 species; walking will be minimal\, terrain mostly level. Our lodgings will be in Klamath Falls\, Oregon. We will meet Thurs. afternoon to check in\, have dinner\, discuss sightings and itinerary; departing time will be noon Sunday. Travel options: drive\, car pool or Amtrak service to Klamath Falls\, OR (with van transportation available at Klamath Falls). Lodging and other information will be sent at time of registration.

It begins near the Wente vineyards on the southwest edge of Livermore\, and winds past cattle ranches\, sycamore-lined creeks\, pine/oak woodlands and chaparral-covered hillsides. It includes a legendary assortment of birds\, such as Golden Eagles\, Yellow-billed Magpies\, Phainopeplas\, Roadrunners\, orioles\, owls\, woodpeckers and songbirds. Bring drinks or lunch\, or buy one at the Junction Café. This tour is primarily roadside birding\, with very little walking.
