Course topics will include musical nationalism, jazz and pop influences, minimalism, the Early Music revival and post-modernist innovators. Great performances by Rubenstein, Toscanini, Landowska, Gould, Rachmaninoff, Casals and Rostropovich will be highlighted. The lives and music of Strauss, Resphigi, Elgar, Reich, Stravinsky, Ravel, Bartok, Gershwin, Cage, Glass and others will be examined in light of 20th century innovations in technology, science, politics and ideas.
