The Alameda shoreline, with miles of sandy white beaches and stunning views of the bay, is one of our local environmental treasures. During the fall and winter it is also a magnet for hundreds of shorebirds — dunlin, godwits, peeps, curlews, plover, avocets and stilts, with lesser numbers of turnstones and oystercatchers — totaling thousands of birds. During a morning walk we usually see over 40 different species of shorebirds, egrets, grebes and ducks, sometimes in great numbers.
