The Alameda shoreline, with miles of sandy white beaches and stunning views of the bay, is one of our local environmental treasures. During the early fall and winter it’s also a magnet for hundreds of shorebirds — Dunlin, godwits, peeps, gulls, curlews, plover, Avocets and stilts, sometimes turnstones and Oystercatchers — totaling thousands of birds. During a morning walk we usually see 40 different shorebirds, egrets, grebes and ducks, sometimes in great numbers.
