Birds of the Bay Area, Fall 2015, Albany

The class meets Monday mornings for 10 weeks with six fieldtrips and four class sessions. The class is designed for beginning and intermediate level birding students, and will discuss bird identification, observation techniques and simple taxonomy (bird family relationships). Also binocular use, taking field notes and various field guides. Fieldtrips to scenic parks and preserves such as Arrowhead Marsh, the Berkeley shoreline, Las Gallinas and Tilden Park will provide a great diversity of birdlife and practical experience in techniques of observation. Total species observed usually ranges 75-80, with a great variety of raptors, shorebirds, woodpeckers, wildfowl and songbirds. Birds frequently observed include Pied-billed grebe, Bushtit, House finch, Raven, Red-winged Blackbird, California quail, Avocet, Willet, Chestnut-backed chickadee, Widgeon and Ruddy duck, Red-tailed hawk, White-tailed kites, Bewick’s wren, Great and Snowy Egret, Nuttall’s and Acorn woodpecker, Brown Pelican, Anna’s Hummingbird, Tree swallows, Killdeer, Mallard, Forster’s tern and Great Blue heron, among others. Car-pooling available for field trips.
