Cosumnes Preserve, Galt (north of Lodi)

December 14, 2013 @ 9:00 am - 4:00 pm

Located near the Sacramento Delta, this preserve of woodlands, marshes and farmland has enormous numbers of waterfowl, Tundra swans, raptors (Red-tails, harriers, kestrels), shorebirds and songbirds. Sandhill Cranes are generally in good numbers this time of year. Walking along the Cosumnes River we can see all manner of songbirds (warblers, kinglets, thrushes, finches, etc.) flitting through the trees. Scaup, gadwall, teal, Hundreds of Shovelers, Wigeon and Pintail are placidly moving about in the many wetlands. Occasionally Peregrines, Great Horned Owls and bitterns can be spotted. In the afternoon we’ll visit Woodbridge Road for more cranes, waterfowl and raptors. Minimal walking. Bring lunch and drinks.
