Dvorak, Wagner and Stravinski: Twilight of the Romantics & the Modernist Revolution in Music

This course celebrates the music of the late Romantics and early Modernist composers and performers from the mid-19th century to the present. Course topics will include the romantic piano concerto, light opera, musical nationalism, jazz influences, the discovery of Early Music and post-modernist innovators. The music of Tchaikovsky, Grieg, Debussy, Strauss, Wagner, Dvorak, Stravinsky, Ravel, Gershwin and others will be examined in light of 19th and 20th century innovations in technology, science, politics and ideas. Course includes performances on CDs, class recitals, lectures, readings and films.
