History by Hollywood: Cinematic Visions of the 20th Century
February 1, 2017 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm
This class examines recent history by showing films that depict the lives of people caught up in the important events of the 20th century. Through historical dramas and satires such as Gandhi, The Third Man, Paths of Glory and Dr. Strangelove, major issues of the last century have been brought to life by great film-makers. This semester films about the 1960’s and ‘70’s will include Silkwood, The Graduate, 8 1/2, Apocalypse Now and Annie Hall by directors such as Stanley Kubrick, Federico Fellini, Mike Nichols and Woody Allen. The lives and performances of stars such as Mastroianni, Nicholson, Keaton, Brando and Streep will be highlighted. The films interpret events of the last half of the 20th century, a period of great innovation, revolution and conflict in Western civilization. Discussion, commentary and analysis of the films and their historical context will follow showings.
