This course surveys the development of new traditions in European art, architecture and civilization from the late Renaissance (ca. 1550/1600) through the Baroque period (ca. 1600/1700) in European civilization. The Golden Age of Dutch painting (Rembrandt, de Hooch, Ruisdael, Hals, Vermeer) will be highlighted. It will examine the lives, work and historical background of artists such as Caravaggio, Rubens, Rembrandt, Vermeer, Titian, Tiepolo, Hals and Velasquez. Class format includes films, internet, readings, class discussion, lectures and fieldtrips to local museums.
