Music of the 20th Century: The Modernist Revolution from Stravinski to Glass

This course celebrates the music of the 20th century Modernist composers and performers from the late 19th century to the present. Course topics will include musical nationalism, jazz and pop influences, minimalism, the Early Music revival and post-modernist innovators. Great performances by Rubenstein, Toscanini, Landowska, Gould, Rachmaninoff, Casals and Rostropovich will be highlighted. The lives and music of Strauss, Resphigi, Elgar, Reich, Stravinsky, Ravel, Bartok, Gershwin, Cage, Glass and others will be examined in light of 20th century innovations in technology, science, politics and ideas. Course includes performances on CDs, class recitals, lectures, readings and films.
