We will continue our survey of Western art and civilization with Roman, Medieval and Islamic Art in European Civilization. This course will survey numerous strands of European art and architecture within the context of Western history from ancient classical civilization to late Medieval times. It will examine the art of Rome, Byzantium, the Anglo-Saxons and Celts. The long cultural exchange between Islamic and Christian civilizations in the Mediterranean world will also be explored. The course will conclude with the 12th century renaissance, including Gothic art, the great cathedrals, Provencal civilization, Giotto and Dante.
